Things had a glimmer of activity in the comments section of the Ethics Question: Torture post I put up a few days, so I thought I'd blather on here about my own opinion on the matter. I see that we're all split about the matter, so maybe if I piss somebody off enough with my opinion, they'll comment. :) Seriously though...I would like to hear arguments from the other side. I'm really intrigued to know.
Perhaps unsurprising to you, but I think torture of another human being (no matter the desired outcome or reasoning behind it) is abhorrently wrong. Mostly for these reasons, which come from a Christian framework:
1) As a believer in the message of Jesus - I think torture goes against everything Jesus represents. Yes, people are twisted. Yes, there is evil in the world. But this is not the world as it was created to be. This world is about as far out in left field as it was intended to be by it's Creator. I think that when believers hold hands with politics and war....it's a dangerous romance.
2) As a human, I respect the sanctity of life....all life. I'm pro-life. I think that killing the unborn is wrong. I also think that torture/execution of believers in China is wrong. And that massacre in the Congo is wrong. I think all human beings deserve respect and dignity. How can one respect life with exceptions?? That just doesn't jive with me. I believe that Jesus loves us all unequivocally, without exception. And when one of his "children" is slain (no matter their "sins") it pains him. In Genesis, when Cain killed Abel, God told him "Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground" (Gen. 4:10). ------- That's all I've got for now. Go on then....fire away.

I just read this article about a US Official who admitted that torture occurred in Guantanamo against a Saudi national who was alleged to have been planning to participate in the 9/11 attacks. She is the first senior Bush administration official responsible for reviewing practices at Guantanamo to publicly state that a detainee was tortured.
Thought I'd throw it up for discussion....what are you thoughts on Guantanamo? About torture? Should Guantanamo be shut down?
I've never had such a vested interest in politics before. As many of you know, I've never even voted, my apathy was so great. I'm not sure if it's because I'm older, or because I have kids, or because I'm just so disgusted with the morals and ethics that have been displayed for the last 8 years...but this year I'm SO INTO this election. I just think it's huge - SO huge.
Here's some thoughts I have on last night's debate, feel free to discuss, rebut, or hash out your opinions in the comments section.
I will begrudgingly say that Gov. Palin did better than I expected.....for what she did (more on that in a sec). Considering her horrible blunder(s) with the media this week (in particular that painful-to-watch interview with Katie Couric) I think there were many people cringing as to what she might say next to undercut her own campaign and further betray her lack on knowledge on key issues.
However, last night it was apparent that she was well-coached and was more prepared to speak on some of those issues. BUT, as I said before when I commented that she did well for what she did - what I meant was that what she did was, in a nutshell: Not answer questions directed at her.
She repeatedly would come back to the issues that she was comfortable speaking about (even if they were irrelevant to the question posed) and hammer home the same sound bytes again and again. I think it would've been easier for her to just have a tape recorder up there so that when her turn came up she could just press play and it would spew out her (1) energy policy expertise, (2) John McCain's tax refunds, and/or (3)any of the following words or phrases: "maverick", "Dontcha", "doggone it", "God bless America".
Which brings me to my next "issue" with Palin: I think she's just too "folksy" to be our country's next Vice President. My "northerner" is coming in here, and I don't mean to sound belittling or demeaning, but there is a very real stereotype against people who speak "folksy" (i.e. that they are of lesser intelligence). Is it true? Not necessarily....quite obviously, Sarah Palin is an intelligent woman, but who the heck gets on national television in a freaking VP DEBATE and uses words like, "doggone it"?? Seriously?? So many people comment that they like her because she's "real" or she's just an average soccer mom....but I say #$%&%*!! WHAT?! I don't WANT an average soccer mom with access to our nuclear codes. I don't WANT a soccer mom who has to cram in the days leading up to the VP Debate in order to be remotely prepared. I don't WANT a soccer mom to have a good chance at becoming the President of the United States.
I also felt like she was John McCain in a suit with boobs and square glasses. Random stories and quips about her family, tangents on subjects that didn't pertain to the questions...all intended to give warm fuzzies and endear her to the heart of the American people - a smart political move I suppose - but I don't want to hear about how you have teachers in your family, and gay/lesbian friends, I want to hear what you've DONE and what JM has DONE and what you plan to do. Skip the stories and the rambling - gimme the facts. ------------- I like Joe Biden. His answers were (I felt) gracious, to the point, and so filled with facts that they were difficult to refute. I like that his foreign policy knowledge is SO vast - especially during a time when the U.S. has some major credibility to rebuild with Allies and the world in general. I like that he has many, many years of actual experience in the Senate and knows the bills and laws and amendments that it seemed Gov Palin only had a skimming knowledge of. I heard on CNN last night that people would zone out and get glassy-eyed when Biden would start talking about bills and things that he had and had not voted for, but I found those to be informative because I don't know about them. And therein lies the problem with the average American - we don't know (to a large extent) what bill they're talking about, or what that means when they say "so and so voted to increase your taxes" We just gasp and say, "WHAT?! HE voted to INCREASE our taxes?! Well, I'M not voting for him!!" and then you find out the whole story is that he really voted to increase the taxes of the wealthy.....or something similar. So when Biden refutes Palin's claims and says, "the bill your talking about is this........ and John McCain voted the exact same way" - I feel like I'm getting educated and seeing behind all the propaganda and sound bytes.
Palin's talking points last night seemed like lots of fluff with no substance. I like details. I think it's great that you want to end the war in Iraq and have a plan for withdrawal, but what are the details? When? How? When all you say is empty words like, "give the money back to the middle class", "keep government where it belongs", "create more jobs", "clean energy", blah, blah, blah...but you don't have any specific plans/examples/history of actually making those changes, you're a big giant Republican soundbyte and nothing more.
Okay....I've gone on enough. I've got a lot more to say on this, but I ended up writing a lot more than I intended. I'm totally up for comments/discussion, so bring it on. Dan-o, I know you're itching to lob a gigantor comment at me, so bring it on.
Oh, and go here to write to your Congressional Representative and tell them what you think about the Bailout.
I know, I know....I can't get away from it. I think it's a sign of being OLD when you become increasingly interested in politics and quote sources and articles from CNN on your blog. But I'd like to just keep telling myself that I'm not old, just more informed and socially conscious. Regardless.....I find it alarming that this person could be the next VP (and likely POTUS) of the United States. Go ahead and bring on the flaming, all you McCain supporters.....

Got some ideas about politics and religion rolling around in my head this morning... and while I know that the blogging world/comments/discussion has been S-L-O-W around here lately (looking pointedly at all of you) maybe I could stir up some discussion....
Politics first:
How strange that Senator McCain says the fundamentals of our economy are strong on the 6th worst Day of Wall Street History.
A $600 billion dollar bankruptcy? A bankruptcy ten times the size of the Enron collapse....the biggest drop in the S&P and Dow Since 9/11.....the collapse of two of the largest wall street firms.
What was really bananas during the Great Depression was the run on the banks, where people pulled their money out like crazy and the banks had nothing left to lend. The difference now is people in the U.S. have no money in the bank to withdraw, it's all tied up in debt on houses that are drastically decreasing in value, IF they can even get them to sell. So then what? The banks begin closing? When banks close, there's no money to lend. So more money is printed in an effort to float the economy, the dollar is inflated...there's more OF it, but it's worth nothing.
In the case of a 21st Century depression, we will be floating in money but it will not buy very much because it will have little relative value. It will be very tough on people with fixed incomes.
What's this all mean? I don't know - don't ask me. I'm just observing. Don't think that I'm all tied up in the financial market or stocks, banking, etc. etc.....I just find this all very interesting. What do you think?

Back to politics for a second....if, like me, you don't understand Sanskrit, then you probably have trouble navigating the truth from the...er..."embellishment" of what is this election's political circus. Go to CNN's FactCheck.org to get the skinny on what's truth and what's not when McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden open their mouths and speak to the nation/world. It's updated by date/event, so currently there's a lot of McCain/Palin bullcrap at the top of the list because of the recent RNC..but for all you Obama haters out there - just scroll down a bit and you can read some of his flubs as well. It's an easy site to navigate and I like how it gives you the REAL deal on what their talking about. But I do find it quite sad that it's pretty much a given that politician's are so full of crap that we have to make a website dedicated entirely to sifting through the bull to find out what's truth and what's not. Seriously....go check it out.

The fact that I like Obama aside.....the fact that I lean left aside.....at what point do politics become less about defining and trumpeting the qualities and traits of the prospective candidate and MORE about mud-slinging and jabs at the opponents?? This is the part of the political race where I get pretty disgusted and bow out for awhile.
Giuliani's speech tonight at the Republican National Convention seriously revolted me. Slam, slam, slam Obama, he says this, he's an idiot, blah, blah, blah. The "other guys" are incompetent fools if they actually think they can run the country better than US (-->insert snooty chuckle here<----) Democrats do the same - I'm not saying either party is exempt, but damn it gets REALLY OLD. The piety, the elitism, the one-up-ism....Blegh. If there was a presidential candidate who pledged to NOT sling mud, NOT run campaigns AGAINST the opponent, stay indifferent on the actions/stances/beliefs of his opponent.....in other words: take the high ground. Shut their mouth and campaign away to make themselves appeal to the masses as the next president I would vote for them in a heartbeat for that reason alone. Tell me what YOU can do...not the shortcomings (apparent, supposed, actual, whatever) of your opponent. The rhetoric....the jokes/criticism of the other side ad nauseum.....I'm done with it for awhile.
For all of you who are interested in politics, or lovers of the McCain/Palin duo....do you think THIS article has any truth to it??
Personal Disclaimer: I think that whether the article is true or not doesn't really matter....(except that IF it was true it would make her rather dishonest and of questionable ethics). In regards to her abilities as a leader and potential skills in leading the country though, it doesn't make a difference for the most part. I read this interesting article this morning on BoingBoing about how Palin's Wikepedia entry was scrubbed and rewritten just an hour before she was announced as McCain's running mate. Thought it was interesting.
Note to all my conservative Republican readers: I don't CARE that her wikipedia entry was rewritten to cast her in more favorable light. I'm sure similar things have been done for Obama and his camp. I don't care about what you heard from your friend about Obama's brother's sister-in-law's lawyer's brother dog walker who was so shady that they had him "eliminated" from society so as not to tarnish Obama's image. I love Palin and wish she were my best friend. I merely thought the article was interesting. enjoy. discuss. :)
So....unless you live in a cave, you've heard that McCain announced his candidate for the vice presidency today - Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. My initial thought was: Whoa. Smart move. What better way to sway the fence-riding Hillary supporters than to nominate a female for the vice presidency? But then on the other hand, she's pro-life and pro-drilling protected lands in Alaska (a.k.a. NOT so green) - which could be a major caveat with the atypical democrat, especially in the female demographic in regards to the pro-life thing. Smartly though, he's got the media world abuzz with his "surprise" announcement and the focus has shifted from Obama.
I'm typically largely apathetic about politics in general - believing that it's a tournament of the lesser of two evils. But after the last presidency and the massive shortcomings of Bush (let's not even go there) I'm rethinking my political stances and reassessing my grounds and how I feel about politics in general. Not to mention that I think this election will prove to be one of the most historical, and exciting, for quite a long time.
A few observations: Let's take a look at the nominees for the VP, because in my opinion there are reasons to be concerned for the safety of the next president, no matter who he is. Obama merely because he is black and would be the first black president and there's a lot of wackjobs out there who might rear up the klan to launch an attack (*shiver*). And McCain because he IS FREAKING OLD (72 this year). So if something were to happen to the next POTUS, who do we have in the wings to take over? Biden, whose experience exceeds even Obama's, or Palin, who's served as governor of a state with more reindeer than people?? In the tragic event that something were to happen to our president, who would YOU rather have leading the free world?
Either way, both candidates can speak in complete sentences and conjugate verbs so at least we're on the up 'n up in THAT department.
What do you think? Good move by McCain or what? Rally up the democratic stragglers/feminists/women by choosing a female or would he have been better served to choose a running mate with a more capacious background?

I apologize in advance for this VERY lengthy blog, but I think it's worth reading if you have any investment in real estate or the market...and I'm really interested to hear your opinion (especially from the following people: Dad Nowack, my brother Rob, and Dan-0, although I'd like to hear from everyone). Wait till you have about 30 minutes, then sit down with some coffee and read this:
I read the blog of this guy Gary Fong. He's a photographer/entrepreneur/businessman...and a dang good one at that. He's a millionaire. Seriously. Anyway, I started reading his blog about a year ago...and he frequently writes on the economy and at that time he was touting the virtues of buying gold. Saying it was a solid investment, that the US Dollar was going to decline, etc. etc. Well....one year later and what do you know? The US Dollar has, incredibly, for the first time in like 40 years dropped in value below the Euro, below the Canadian dollar and the price of gold per ounce has more than tripled. So I've really been paying attention to what he's had to say lately.
He wrote this on Jan. 12:
I WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE CRASH I have been struggling with ways to be inspiring, and encouraging. I constantly wrestle in my mind about why I have to write my financial forecasts when so many people are stuck. I don't want to be insensitive and go on and on about what is going to happen if you are stuck in a situation that you cannot get out of.But I can't not share what I've learned in all of my volumes of reading and experience. I am a person who has foreclosed on another individual (he was fine about it, it was totally friendly - there was nothing he could've done to save his home). Having foreclosed on someone, I know what happens in this mechanism and I totally understand the foreclosure process.It takes at least a year. The ranch had gone into receivership and the previous owner was forced to move out. By the time I came onto the scene, I tried to rescue it in preforeclosure, but the previous owner went bankrupt. Therefore, he no longer had the title and couldn't sell it. I had to buy the mortgage (the right to foreclose) from the bank. It cost me nearly a million bucks and all I had was a piece of paper. Not even keys to the ranch. Only the right to foreclose. Then I had to start the foreclosure process (either I was going to do it or the bank was going to do it, so it was not an aggressive move on my part). I had to take the property to court, have the court foreclose the property and only then did I get the keys. To a ranch that was an absolute mess.In Canada, bankruptcy is a completely different animal than the U.S. To paraphrase, in Canada you still get a fresh start. In the U.S. - thanks to President Bush's recently signed legislation - let's just say that you don't get a fresh start. In fact, even under bankruptcy a debtor can attach your wages far into the future, even for the rest of your life. So walking away from a property in the U.S. is not something one should do without really good legal advice.The fact that foreclosures hit a record (and it was so obvious that it was coming) is only the beginning because THESE foreclosed properties have not yet hit the market. When they do (and it may be up to a year from now because many would have to be fixed up, etc) then they get sold at "foreclosure" prices because the bank just wants to dump and liquidate and reduce the bad assets in their holdings. So if you have a house, and all over your neighborhood foreclosed properties are being put on the market - that means the "comparable" values that the appraisers use to grant financing will for sure go down. In other words - regardless of if your house has been foreclosed on - or not - the value of it in a year's time will be foreclosed value because of the number of deadbeat properties competing against you for buyers.How are you going to find a buyer for more than loan value - when you are competing with banks dumping their losses right in your own neighborhood?Is that scenario scary? Now remember that the banks are in the business of making money by lending people money to buy homes. Would they have money to lend you if they are up to their eyeballs in deadbeat homes that they cannot dump? The banks in theory would face a liquidity crisis with NO MONEY TO LEND. That would be a nightmare scenario in a future where real estate collapses.But in a historic situation where the tail wags the dog, the liquidity crisis occurred BEFORE THE CRASH - causing the crash. You see, Countrywide nearly went bankrupt because it had no source of funds to lend. Mortgage-backed securities have all disappeared, and there literally is no money to lend for house purchases. With no money to lend for mortgages - who is going to buy your house??? I tried so hard SO HARD a couple of years ago talking about stagflation and the coming crash in real estate - and I was saying it before it hit the high. And some of you didn't believe me and I am so sorry I tried to warn you. Just do a search backwards on this site - you will see - or those of you who frequent this blog will know that I've been telling you to BE CAREFUL and not invest in U.S. real estate. I stopped buying real estate in the U.S. SEVEN years ago. Now the panic is just beginning, and the disaster is coming in the comparable values. Appraisers will be giving your house a valuation compared to foreclosed homes. Those appraisers will give the banks really low values - and then the banks will have no money to lend to any potential buyer for your house. If you think real estate has hit the skids I have to tell you - again - it hasn't even begun.I really want to give inspiration and motivation, but all I keep coming up with is a call to awareness. India and China are emerging so fast, and if we think, "well if the US goes down the world goes down" is egocentric. Other countries diversify into the U.S. with their investments, and while they wouldn't be happy if the world's largest economy collapses - they will pick up the slack and take over. Nobody ever took India or China seriously a few years ago. Look at them now, and they haven't even begun.I wrote this post in response to Nuyokaandco's comments in earlier posts about maybe purchasing a property in Florida with his brother. The fact that he was contemplating purchasing this property prompted me to take more action and explain more fully what is coming with the economy.If you try to take your US Dollar to europe, you'll find that it buys very little. Historically it is worth less than at any time in history. To think that "if the US crashes, so will the world" is that example of the pompous impestuous, bratty attitude that gives an attitude of impunity that we never have to pay our bills. Good heavens, did everybody think that they would never have to pay these debts???? My goodness I am so sorry. Tell me what I can do to help, but do not ask me to calm your nerves by telling you that everything is going to be fine because I'm not going to do that. One can say, "well I will just wait out the cycle" because the U.S. real estate has usually 10 year cycles - but honestly, with what I know, once the market collapses (and it hasn't hardly begun), it will not come back. EVER.
Interesting, don't you think? Steve and I discussed it a lot. What would that mean for us? For our family? How could that play out? I drew Steve in, showed him Gary's predictions, etc. Steve thinks he's a little "doom and gloom" but we both kept up with his blog now.

I no longer have U.S. securities, but if I did, you betcha I would dump everything I had at the opening bell.I've been getting a lot of emails and comments about what is a photographer to do in a great depression, and I'm still tossing that one around. Regarding U.S. real estate I would at least list it right away and consider whatever offer comes in, but I doubt anybody would buy anything right now, and even if they did, they couldn't complete the loan because the banks have no money to lend. Tomorrow is going to be a wreck at the opening bell. Once the market crashes, oh good heavens there go jobs. And once jobs go here come entitlement programs to rescue those in need - for a U.S. economy that is so thick into a war that has no end. Sure is a good thing that the U.S. is spending all of that money to rescue the Iraqis in the name of democracy.Everybody in the U.S. had a real sense of wealth, but built on completely borrowed money. Now everybody realizes it and the investment dollars are going to go to other economies. In just a few hours, by the time most of you wake up and read this, Wall Street is going to open to a crash. It is so odd to know what is going to happen in tomorrow's market hours in advance, but this is because of Global trading of U.S. Futures prices. While the U.S. markets were closed for the holiday, the world reacted to the U.S. subprime collapse and responded by massive drops in value. It is so weird knowing that in just a few hours, the U.S. Stock market is going to crash, and when it crashes this will start the collapse of the U.S. economy. I think that global investors are diving for safety right now, and liquidating their positions in a panic, but when they realize that the emerging economies have strong fundamentals (especially with them being net savers and investors, rather than borrowers on credit like the U.S.) the international markets will stabilize, even after Wall Street crashes.Well, we are all in this together. There are many international visitors to this site, and I'm sure we are all very concerned about the collapse of the U.S. economy. I am really sad right now because I see what's coming, and when my bond broker friend said that the bottom is "unimaginable" - I can imagine. I'll try to think of some suggestions for those of you who are unprepared. I'm not coming up with anything brilliant if you are late to the preservation game. And what do you know? Confession: I have never voted. Not once. Not ever. I know, I know.....it just never seemed that important to me...I mean, really, does my vote actually make a difference?? I used to think not, but this time around I will be voting, for a myriad of reasons.
Anyway, I find the whole shabang a little befuddling. Politics in general infuriate me, because I truly believe that not a single one of them is ever completely honest or has the best intentions for the American public. I have been struggling with ways to be inspiring, and encouraging. I constantly wrestle in my mind about why I have to write my financial forecasts when so many people are stuck. I don't want to be insensitive and go on and on about what is going to happen if you are stuck in a situation that you cannot get out of.
