Documentary, Anyone??

I've been in the mood to watch some documentaries lately. Any suggestions??

I thought that America Unchained looked interesting. Basic Premise: British guys come to America with a simple plan: Buy a second hand car. Travel from coast to coast. Try not to give any money to "The Man"

"In other words, no Holiday Inns, no Best Westerns and no Comfort Suites. No Shells, no Arcos and no BP gas stations. No MacDonalds, no Starbucks and no chains of any kind. Just Mom & Pop business all the way."

I'd also really like to see The Business of Being Born, but our Blockbuster doesn't carry it. :( I'll check some other places, but I highly doubt I'll find it in Smallbany, Georgia.

Also want to see Cracked Not Broken, a film following the story of a middle-aged mother and crack addict who prostitutes herself to maintain her addiction. That'll make you reconsider your stereotypes.

Also on my list: Prince Among Slaves - the true story (duh, it's a documentary) about an African prince enslaved in America in 1788.

Invisible Children is one of those movies that I don't want to watch because it will break my heart and most likely leave me in tears, but I think it's one of those movies that I should watch.

Lord, Save us From Your Followers. Ouch. This one will hit close to home. A reminder of just how badly we (as Christians) have screwed up the message of Christ.

Last one: Born Into Brothels is about the kids of Calcutta's redlight district. While their mother's work as prostitues, one New York photographer gives seven kids cameras to document their life through the lense of a camera.

I know, it's a lot....but I like documentaries. :) How 'bout you? Have you seen any good documentaries? Have you ever seen a documentary? Are you a documentary buff?? Got any recommendations??

I've seen born into brothels... heart-wrenching!!

I too like to watch a good documentary... if they're not too thick with personal agendas.

I've seen Born into Brothels too! Wow, Tammi, you're so behind the curve.

Other doc'tries:
1. Naked States, Gerald just remembers he walked in and there was a naked, old guy on a bicycle. Funny. I liked it, it was cool. Then there's Naked...a sequel, can't remember the name. Haven't seen it but want to.

2. True story of Emmitt Till (I think that's the name), made me sick to my stomach. A kid from Chicago whistled at a white woman while visiting relatives in Mississippi (I think - somewhere Deep South, of course) and you can guess the rest - maybe not - don't watch if you have a weak stomach.

3. Can't remember - I'd have to look at my Netflix account. You need to get Netflix, they have almost any doc you'd want. That's why I have it, seriously, b/c I cannot get G to rent docs. He says their boring - but then he think Christmas w/the Griswolds deserves an Oscar. :0)

I always comment too much. Comment implies short, right? Oh, well.

Oh - Invisible Children - my cousin was one of the founders of the organization. He went to USC and a bunch of guys got together one summer and decided to go to Africa w/a camera, not having any plan.

They were moved enough by what they saw to come back and start produce the documentary. I remember when he had us look at a part of the documentary and pass it around to people we might know that would be interested in it. They were trying to get it out to as many people as possible. It's moving to say the least.

He's out now but he travels all over the world doing missions/humanitarian work - we never know where he is, except at Christmas when we always meet and talk at Grandmas in K.C.

His dad's always been a minister of education in S.Baptist churches so they do turn out some pretty decent people. :0) Or maybe I should say despite them.

Anyway, another long comment with lots of stuff you didn't need to know.

I love documentaries. So long as they are something like Drop Dead Gorgeous or This is Spinal Tap. :)

Boy do I crack myself up.

I'm a Docu-Buff wanna be. I've seen the mainstream stuff like Super Size Me and Resurrection but I think my favorite is one called The Times of Harvey Milk.

It's about the homosexual Superior Councilor who was killed by Dan White. It goes on to explain how, though White sneaked in through a window and was literally found with the smoking gun, he was found innocent due to Twinkies.

Great stuff!
