Feed the Pig

I heard this commercial on the radio the other day stating that last year, American's actually spent more than they made - the worst economic situation since the Great Depression. The people who ran the commercial cited this website, Feedthepig.org - which I just perused and think is a great site. It's very interactive - you can enter in the type of person you are, the things that you do that may chip away at your bank account, and it will tell you how much you can save in a year and other useful info. Check it out if you get a minute or two.
Anyway, that got me thinking about debt, savings, money in general. Depressing subject mostly (oddly, it's depressing for everyone I know - no matter their income) so I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone out there is doing in the way of savings. Did YOU spend more than you earned last year??

Here's a poll, for anonymity sake....because I know people are weird about talking about their money for some reason.

NNNOOOOO....!!! Don't do it! Don't get an exterminator!

We have bugs here and we had them in Florida (remember the flying roach incident when you interviewed? - ha, we still laugh about that when the Coxes come visit...sorry)

So, we bought the DIY bug spray from Lowe's and I tied a bandana on my face and went around the OUTSIDE of the house. It helped but I got a sore throat and coughed for days. That was it - we were off bug spray.

They say that roaches are attracted to the adhesive on tape so if you have any boxes with packing tape, get rid of them and get plastic to store EVERYTHING in. We did that and it helped tremendously. The roaches only seem to be bad at certain times of the year here - and always in Anna's bathroom b/c it's back by the swimming pool. I just kill them every morning when I find them. But, you guys are further south.

Did you know that ants are allergic to chalk? Just an interesting sidebar...

A natural solution? Boric acid. It sounds bad but they say it works and it's pretty much non-toxic.

Black mold...hmm...try putting something made with real silver (like a silver chain) in your toilet tank. Silver keeps mold at bay - although, I don't know if it works w/black mold. We don't have that here in our toilets unless we don't clean good for maybe TWO weeks. We do have black mold in our shower and I'm just waiting until we renovate it to get rid of it all.

Do you put bottles of shampoo, etc., in your tub corners? Don't do that - instead, spend $25 and go to Bed, Bath and Beyond and purchase the shower liner that has mesh bags on the inside to keep all your stuff. I did that to try to combat the mold and it definitely helps.

One other bit of advice: don't buy the organic toilet cleaner at Target - it sucks! You're toilets turn pink in a day or two and I'm not sure if it's b/c it doesn't really clean that well - or just some sort of weird chemical reaction.

I went organic w/cleaning products about the time we moved from FL. My lungs are very sensitive to chemicals and whenever I'd give the house a good cleaning, I'd be down for two or three days after w/sinus and breathing issues.

Vinegar works well, as does steam mops for the floors - they just use water to disinfect. Now, I do still use Comet, just not the spray, only the powder. We have the old porcelain tubs and they hold stains bad but someone told me a few years back to clean your tubs w/shampoo since it takes all the gunk out of your hair, it takes all the gunk off the tub. And it does with hardly any scrubbing! So, tubs: powdered Comet and shampoo. I just keep a bottle of some cheap shampoo in the cleaning closet.

Last but not least: get a glass cleaning cloth - one of those microfiber types. Then spray your glass w/vinegar and water and wipe with the slick/satin-type microfiber cloth (at the Dollar Tree). Just make sure you don't put fabric softener in the laundry when you wash the microfiber cloths b/c then they don't absorb or clean well.

Sorry, but I just got caught up on your blog from the last few days.

Later.

It's not really fair to put, "I'm wearing pink underwear" and, "I spent more than I earned last year" in the same vote.

How was I to pick which was most important? When in doubt, always go for the pink undies. Yeah!

Such dilemna.
