Some Baby Deliciousness for Your Enjoyment

He crawled yesterday.

After eating a snack after nap, I brushed him off and set him in the living room with a basket of toys and went into the kitchen to start making dinner. Next thing I know I turn around and there he is in the kitchen. And he's been crawling around the house ever since, pulling himself up on the coffee table (now put away), chasing after his brothers, picking up minuscule pieces of lint and paper and eating them. Last night Steve and I shook our heads over how much he's changed in the last 7 months and then I promptly demanded he impregnate me immediately so that I could have another small baby burrito to swaddle and nuzzle to which he shot me a look that clearly stated "hell, no".
Maybe next week.

Here are some from today, with him in his Argyle Baby Legs, looking so soft and adorable and baby blue that I just wanted to eat him up. Hope you all had a great Friday.

A Spot 'o Tea

Today the boys are having an English tea party at preschool because they're learning about other countries, so they had to dress up in "church clothes" so they looked the part. They had a lot of fun with it....here's some pictures. I almost posted the straight up color versions, but decided to post the textured ones because I'm mildly obsessed with texturizing and grunging up my photos lately. And if you have no idea what that means, that's ok.

I love these two monkeys....

Happy Wednesday! Cheerio!

I think I'm a little lopsided....

Try it: Right Brain-Left Brain Creativity Test

My Results:

Thank you for taking the Creativity Test. The results show your brain dominance as being:

Left Brain Right Brain
38% 62%

You are more right-brained than left-brained. The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body. In addition to being known as right-brained, you are also known as a creative thinker who uses feeling and intuition to gather information. You retain this information through the use of images and patterns. You are able to visualize the "whole" picture first, and then work backwards to put the pieces together to create the "whole" picture. Your thought process can appear quite illogical and meandering. The problem-solving techniques that you use involve free association, which is often very innovative and creative. The routes taken to arrive at your conclusions are completely opposite to what a left-brained person would be accustomed. You probably find it easy to express yourself using art, dance, or music. Some occupations usually held by a right-brained person are forest ranger, athlete, beautician, actor/actress, craftsman, and artist.

Your complete evaluation follows below:

Your left brain/right brain percentage was calculated by combining the individual scores of each half's sub-categories. They are as follows:

Your Left Brain Percentages

32% Linear (Your most dominant characteristic)
27% Sequential
27% Reality-based
17% Symbolic
17% Logical
14% Verbal (Your least dominant characteristic)

Your Right Brain Percentages

50% Nonverbal (Your most dominant characteristic)
44% Fantasy-oriented
39% Random
39% Intuitive
28% Concrete
6% Holistic (Your least dominant characteristic)

The Doomsday Vault

Check out this article on the Doomsday Seed Vault announced in Norway tomorrow. I had no idea there even was such a thing, but apparently there are seed vaults worldwide.
Interesting, nonetheless....

And don't forget, tomorrow is Good Deed Tuesday so start thinking about your good deed....

Fun link Amy Lynn!

Because He Rocks My Socks

Every year the smartest kid (based on SAT scores) at all the area schools gets nominated the Star Student, and in turn nominates one of their teachers as the Star Teacher. It's a pretty big deal. They have a dinner at a country club to honor the student and their chosen teacher and each of the students gives a speech about the teacher that they chose. To quote the requirements of the Star Teacher: "...exemplifies the profound influence and admirable qualities of Georgia teachers and dedication to the profession that helps shape the destiny of our state and nation."

Steve-o is Star Teacher this year.
Again.

Yup. 2 years at Sherwood. 2 years Star Teacher.
He's awesome. All the kids at the school love him. And not just because he's "fun" or because he teaches a bird course (you "fly" right through), on the contrary, his classes are difficult and challenging and he challenges them intellectually, and makes them think, not memorize, and he teaches them to think critically, and question everything. He's the ideal Socratic teacher.
And I'm more than a little proud.

Almost....

**Almost** crawling......
and then we'll be in BIG trouble.
:)

On the Merry Go Round

Last week....

Where's My Gwasses?

That's what AJ asks me whenever it's sunny outside and we're headed out for the day...."hey! I need my sun gwasses!"

I think we're going to have A LOT of girls calling our house in about 10 years.

The Garbage Game

I played The Gotham Gazette Garbage Game and sent 1,897,871 tons of refuse across 1,921,409 miles.

Say WHAT?!

This morning, when I picked the boys up from preschool I was given a registration packet just in case we wanted to enroll Owen in Sherwood's kindergarten next year. I have a lot to say on the words "just in case" and the face that it's more like the unspoken rule: "do it or you're fired", but I won't go into that here, now.
Anyway, let me pick my jaw up off the floor to relay this information to you and you can either agree that the costs of sending Owen to Sherwood are absolutely LAUGHABLE or...tell me I'm crazy and to get over it.

Try this on for size: Your wee 5 year old boy is preparing to enter kindergarten in the fall. You open your welcome packet and peruse your costs. Here's what you see:

New Student Application & Testing Fee: $50
Initial Registration Fee: $300
"Tuition Assurance Fee" I'm still trying to figure out what this means: $150
Technology Fee: $100

So...right off the bat, we've got to pay $600 UP FRONT before the school year even starts. THEN, throw in the actual tuition of $4,425.00 available in low monthly payments of only $442.50, just to make things a little easier on you, thankyouverymuch. NOW, granted that we would get a small discount, considering that Steve is employed by the school, but I'm not sure how much - 15%, 25% maybe?

Oh yes, but let's not forget the UNIFORMS, which absolutely MUST be purchased by XX Uniform Company because they are of the utmost quality and affordable to the masses
the school gets a kickback for it.

So....let's go minimalist and say that we get the O-dawg 2 pants, 2 shorts, 3 short-sleeve shirts, and 3 long-sleeve shirts. The total for that small wardrobe (that he can't wear anywhere else but to school, and may outgrow half of part way during the school year)?? That would cost $204.90 plus tax. Oh, and heck, let's throw in a sweatshirt for the couple of months it's cold out - that'll be an extra $25.45. And a hooded jacket for the spring? Well, sure! $30.74 please, bringing our grand total bare minimum clothing cost to: $261.09. Plus tax. And please don't tear them, or get them dirty, or grow out of them because little boys never do things like that.

SO our total for my 50lb little boy to start learning how to read at SCA in the fall will be approximately $5286.09. Throw in a few hundred in incidentals (field trips, christmas parties, cupcakes for the class on your birthday, etc. etc) and you have enough money to take the fam to Aruba for 2 weeks over spring break.

I vote for Aruba.

Good Deed: Accomplished!

Our neighbors are a little...er...weird.
We've tried on several occasions to make conversation with them, say hello, chat it up, etc. and typically get one or two word responses. They're not RUDE, per se, they just apparently don't talk. Or socialize. Or understand the dynamics of human social interaction.
It's a single woman and her 2 grandsons living with her. The grandmother works funky hours...I think she's a nurse or something, based on the fact that she wears scrubs (i know, I'm a genius), and sometimes I'll notice her coming home from work when I take the boys to school in the morning, and sometimes she'll be heading off to work at 9 am...or 3 pm. It's always different.

Anyway, so my Good Deed Tuesday idea was to make them a dinner so that they could just heat it up and eat it whenever was convenient for them. So this afternoon I whipped up a Fiesta Chicken Casserole and doubled it up so that I would have an extra and just a few minutes ago I took it over.
I felt a little awkward, trying to figure out how I would present it.
"Hi. I'm your neighbor. Here's some dinner I made you" ?? OR...
"I know that we never actually TALK and you've never really told me your NAME or anything, but well...here's some dinner"
They're simple folk, maybe I should go the simple route: "Hi. I made dinner. Here's some for you."

But then the door opened, so I just told them that I noticed that she seemed to work some crazy hectic hours and I thought they might like some dinner. They could eat it tonight, or freeze it and save it for another day. I put in the instructions to bake it and included a side dish with it. And our neighbor...who I've never seen smile, smiled a huge gap-toothed smile, took the food from my outstretched hand and said thank you because she hates to cook.
And then it got a little weird.
Why's that, you ask? Because she just took the casserole and shuffled back into the kitchen.
"Okay! Well...see you later!" I called. And then her grandson shut the door.
Gently.
But in my face.

LOL

But it was fun. And it was my good deed for today.

Did you do one??

We're Theme-ing It....Get Ready For Good Deed Tuesdays!

So....how 'bout we start doing a theme once a week. I made up the theme...you participate. Sound good?

Here's my idea: Good Deed Tuesdays
It's as simple as it sounds....do at least one good deed for someone else on Tuesdays. It can be something small (buy a latte for the person behind you in line at Starbucks) or go all out (give your neighbor your car because theirs broke down). Whatever it is, it has to be for someone else and it has to be somewhat inconvenient for you and not TOO easy (here honey, I'm doing a good deed by closing the lid on the toilet seat so you don't fall in when you get up to pee tonight).

I've already got mine figured out....I'll post it tomorrow....start thinking about yours and then tomorrow: execute! Then tell us about it...either here or on your own blog. No excuses...it's not like you're overwhelmed with getting back into the work week because it's Monday, and you're not too obsessed with weekend plans because it's Friday, it's Good Deed TUESDAY-early enough in the week that you have brain cells left to think of something, but not too late that you're in weekend-mode.

Come ON!! It'll be fun!

Ava's Rule

With the weather starting to heat up down here in the south, I just wanted to put up a reminder about summer safety and the importance of keeping your car locked AT ALL TIMES when it's parked in your driveway. It can only take a few minutse for a tragedy to happen, so please click on the link above, and tell all your friends, spread the word to everyone you know with small children so that something terrible like Ava's tragedy doesn't happen to anyone else this summer.

Where's that marijuna? An Owenism....

Just now...I'm recovering from a particularly hellish "workout" (i.e. Dan the workout man invents various forms of torture to effectively rubberize my upper arms) and Owen is digging around in the refrigerator.

me: Owen, what are you into out there?
Owen: I want some pot.
me: You want some pot??
Owen: No, I want some POT.
Me: you want what?
Owen: POT
Me: We don't have any pot. And even if we did, it wouldn't be in the refrigerator.
Owen: But I LIKE it!!
Me: Whatever, punk.
Owen: I. WANT. SOME. POT!
Me: with a sigh, getting up, going to the fridge, looking inside. Owen points to some leftover chocolate pie from Valentine's Day. "That's not pot. It's chocolate pie"
Owen: Oh. Well, I want some.

Valentine Indifference

We don't celebrate Valentine's Day.

*collective gasp from audience*

I know.
No flowers. No chocolate. No cards. No gifts. No dinner. No nothing.
But it's not because we're scrooges, or on the verge of divorce, or have no romance remaining remaining in our love life (well, maybe that last one is slightly true - come ON, we do have 3 kids under age 5).

It all started back in 2000.....
Actually, it's pretty simple. Ever since before we were married, as sophmores in college, we've both coached sports. And every SINGLE FREAKING year Steve had a basketball game ON Valentine's day. I was indignant, totally bummed, slightly pissed of the first year. "WHAT?! You have a basketball game? It's VALENTINE'S Day!" and then I'd try to get him to cancel it and tell his players and the other team and the other parents that I'm sorry I just can't make it since it's Valentine's Day and my fiance wants me to take her to dinner and buy her a gift.

Well, that didn't happen so much. I was bummed, but then it happened again the next year. This time I was incredulous, but got over it a little quicker. "What?! AGAIN?! Sure, why not?"

And then it happened again the next year.

And the next.

Apparently "the people" who plan basketball schedules don't pay any attention to consumer-driven-artificial-holidays because this had definitely become a pattern. So...it was just never a big deal.
In the 7 years we've been married, Steve has NOT had a basketball game on Valentine's Day 2 of those years. This is the 2nd. But now it's too late. We're over it. It's lovely. A nice sentiment. We love each other. This morning I even said "happy valentine's day" to him while he was in the shower. And we chuckled over it. But we're not doing anything. Not really. Although I DID actually make him a really yummy dinner for tonight....but that's about it. We'll eat dinner as a family, maybe take the boys on a bike ride, put the kids to bed, and chill out together for the night.
Valentine's Day? What's all the fuss about? Are we missing something??

Yummy Pancakes

My boys LOVE pancakes. All 3 of them. Especially AJ, who is a pancake whore and would eat them for every meal, every day, if he could. And shape them into Mickey Mouse, if you please.

So....pancakes aren't exactly high on the nutrition scale, so I went hunting (and experimenting) with healthier alternatives. Previously, my only experience with "healthy" pancakes was my sister-in-law's "buckwheat" pancakes which are, in all honesty, GROSS (sorry, Manda), so I was cringing as I looked online for pancake recipes...but then this morning, I tried these, and they were YUMMY. Tyler of course, ate them up.....AJ the Pancake Whore liked them tremendously (despite the fact that they were not mixed up from a box with Aunt Jemima on the front), and Owen even begrudgingly ate a few bites (which is a miracle considering that he doesn't eat much of anything that doesn't taste, smell, or look like pizza, string cheese, oranges, or hotdogs).

Don't be scared...they're yummy. Try 'em:

Whole Wheat Pancakes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup wheat germ
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 1/3 tablespoons unsalted butter (you could use canola oil if you don't want to use butter)
  • 2 1/2 cups buttermilk (who has buttermilk on hand?? I used 1/2 yogurt, 1/2 skim milk, but you could use applesauce too. OR, if you want to make your own (sortof) buttermilk, add a few tablespoons of lemon or vinegar to regular milk)
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (this is just to coat the pan....I used cooking spray)
  • 2 tablespoons flax seed - not called for in the recipe, but I threw some in for nutritional value.
  • You can also add in some other stuff....blueberries, smashed bananas, choc chips, whatever floats your boat. I kept mine plain, cuz I'm simple that way.

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a food processor or in a large bowl (food processor is nice, but who has time for that?? I used a bowl), combine the whole wheat flour, white flour, wheat germ or oats, baking powder, baking soda, brown sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut the butter into small pieces with a knife, and add the butter to the flour-mixture. Mix until the mixture has a sand-like consistency (like to would cut butter into a pastry or pie crust - I used a fork to smoosh the butter in...although a pastry cutter would work best - man, I wish I had one of those).
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour-butter mixture, and add the buttermilk and eggs. Stir until the liquids are fully incorporated.
  4. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and grease the surface with 1 tablespoon of butter or oil. Ladle the batter onto the surface to form 4 inch pancakes. Once bubbles form on the top of the pancakes, flip them over, and cook them on the other side for about 2 minutes.
Seriously, it's good....give it a try - don't knock it 'til you try it....and if you've had my sister in law's buckwheat pancakes...these taste nothing like them. :)
Love ya Manda!

She's BAaaaaack

At least I think, anyway.

My friend Amy has reentered blogger world....check her out...she's actually done THREE POSTS IN A ROW.

Get a Human

You know when you're unlucky enough to have to call customer service for something...something that should take mere minutes, and somehow you end up on the phone forever?? Like the time I was on the phone with Dell for AN HOUR AND A HALF??? Or the time I got stuck in automatic simulated-human prompter land with Mediacom for 20 minutes? It went something like this:

Prompter: Welcome to Mediacom. I'd like to know what your problem is. After the beep, say what you're calling in reference to. For example, say 'cable' , or 'telephone':

Me: telephone

Prompter: Okay. I heard you say internet. Is that correct?

Me: NO! Telephone!

Prompter: Okay. I heard you say telephone. Is that correct?

Me: Yes, moron.

Prompter: Okay. Great. After the beep, tell me what we can do to help you with your telephone. For example, say 'line down' or 'setup a new line' or 'schedule repair'

Me: Schedule repair

Prompter: Okay. I heard you say 'setup a new line' Is that correct?

Me: No!No!No! Repair! REPAIR! (at this point i start punching "0" repeatedly to try to get to an operator, a LIVE one.

Prompter: I'm sorry. I didn't understand that. Can you repeat your problem please?

Me: YOU! YOU are my problem, you stupid automated person.

Prompter: I'm sorry. I didn't understand that. Please speak clearly and say your problem so that I can direct you.

Me: I'D LIKE TO SPEAK TO A [EXPLETIVE] LIVE PERSON. THAT'S my problem.

Prompter: Okay. It sounds like you'd like to speak to an operator. Hold on, I'll transfer you.
_______________

What the ---???
So apparently, automated voice lines are programmed to recognize when the caller starts cursing so they can be transferred to real people before the company infuriates the so much that they lose them as customers.

So next time you have to call customer service for something, you could either do what I did, and swear loudly at the automated operator OR you could look here at this list at Get a Human, where they give you detailed instructions on what you'll need to do to...well, get a human when you call.
Just a bit of helpful information for you on your Tuesday morning.

This is Freaking Awesome

Casey and i just spent the last 45 minutes watching pranks and funny improv by THIS GROUP (named Improv Everywhere)

This is our favorite one that they did.....
We would like to do this in Albany...at the foodcourt at the mall...we need about 150 people. Who's in?

Also funny was LOOK UP MORE and FREE SNOWCONES and NO PANTS SUBWAY

Art...Politics...

Saw this today and thought it was pretty cool....No matter what candidate you support or don't, I think it's a pretty creative and artful video with a good message.
Thoughts?

Little Monkey

Have I mentioned that I absolutely adore this child?
Well, I do.

fjewkleijksma

Ok, so that blog title means nothing...but I was drawing a blank for a title, so I just smacked on the keys and that's what came out.

Thanks for your participitation in the "it would make my day post..." although there were a few slackers out there who i know didn't participate (you know who you are)...may the fleas of a thousand camels bite your feet in bed tonight....not that I'm bitter about it or anything.

Let's see...what's new around here?? It's been awhile since I've gone a week without blogging, but I'm not sure there's anything exciting that has occurred worth blogging about....

I read The Kite Runner this week and it was excellent. I'm eagerly anticipating when the movie based on the book comes out....i think it will be an excellent film for the general American public to see (if they haven't already read the book).....excuse me, where's my soap box? Ahh yes, there it is. Like I said, an excellent film for the general public to see...a poignant reminder that the people of Afghanistan are actually human beings and that blip that you skim in the NYTimes or page 4B of USA Today is about people, mothers, babies, children like yours....not just a big red target for bombs and missiles or a treasure trove of oil.

Anyway. Stepping down now.

I'm also starting to read The Spiderwick Chronicles, also coming to theatres just because I have a soft spot for children's literature and if it's good (and I anticipate it will be) I'm excited to read it to the boys one day....a few chapters a night before bed when they get older and yes I am corny and old school like that and shut the heck up about it.

That's about it around here....here's a few pictures of Owen, enjoying our nice weather and making some sidewalk art a few days ago. I'm wondering when he got so big and less like a preschooler and more like a boy....if you could inform me as to how and when that happened, I'd appreciate.
Have a great weekend!

Got Drool?
