We don't celebrate Valentine's Day.
*collective gasp from audience*
I know.
No flowers. No chocolate. No cards. No gifts. No dinner. No nothing.
But it's not because we're scrooges, or on the verge of divorce, or have no romance remaining remaining in our love life (well, maybe that last one is slightly true - come ON, we do have 3 kids under age 5).
It all started back in 2000.....
Actually, it's pretty simple. Ever since before we were married, as sophmores in college, we've both coached sports. And every SINGLE FREAKING year Steve had a basketball game ON Valentine's day. I was indignant, totally bummed, slightly pissed of the first year. "WHAT?! You have a basketball game? It's VALENTINE'S Day!" and then I'd try to get him to cancel it and tell his players and the other team and the other parents that I'm sorry I just can't make it since it's Valentine's Day and my fiance wants me to take her to dinner and buy her a gift.
Well, that didn't happen so much. I was bummed, but then it happened again the next year. This time I was incredulous, but got over it a little quicker. "What?! AGAIN?! Sure, why not?"
And then it happened again the next year.
And the next.
Apparently "the people" who plan basketball schedules don't pay any attention to consumer-driven-artificial-holidays because this had definitely become a pattern. So...it was just never a big deal.
In the 7 years we've been married, Steve has NOT had a basketball game on Valentine's Day 2 of those years. This is the 2nd. But now it's too late. We're over it. It's lovely. A nice sentiment. We love each other. This morning I even said "happy valentine's day" to him while he was in the shower. And we chuckled over it. But we're not doing anything. Not really. Although I DID actually make him a really yummy dinner for tonight....but that's about it. We'll eat dinner as a family, maybe take the boys on a bike ride, put the kids to bed, and chill out together for the night.
Valentine's Day? What's all the fuss about? Are we missing something??

It's funny that you ask if you're "missing something" because actually the history of St. Valentine is a mystery...
There are actually around 6 cononized saints named either Valentine or Valentinus... so of course there are around 6-10 varying legends about why St. Valentine is associated with love.
My favorite tale says that a Roman army captain decided that unmarried men make better soldiers so he had marriage outlawed for young men. Valentine, a priest, continued to perform marriages in secret and was eventually martyred for it. :)
But I think it's cool that you guys don't celebrate it... who needs a holiday dedicated to indulging on chocolate and kissing and jewelry...... wait-a-second... nah nevermind!
Aaah, I think you guys are missing out. You think you'll regret it one of these days? Maybe you're being too practical? Maybe I'm growing too sentimental in my old age? Probably. I just like the naughty cards and a reason to go out and buy a new pair of jammies--I'm a p.j.girl; Love, love, love them.
I get the whole Bball thing and all the kids and everything but when he's not coaching on V-day, GO OUT. I'll fly down and watch your kids!
Hum, Tammi, I am starting to worry about you. Just a couple of months ago you posted about not doing Christmas, now your not doing Valentine's Day. Men would like to ignore all the holidays and it is up to us ladies to nag them into remembrance. Course you could do what I do...not say a thing then go out and buy myself a gift the day after, making sure to spend too much $$$ on it, then showing it to Gerry and thanking him for the nice gift. Guilt can work for your advantage here. ;) But seriously we all need a reminder occasionally of our love for each other. The words mean so much but actions deliver emotional happiness. Make a date for a belated Valentine's Day and get a baby sitter and enjoy each other, one on one. I hear Casey is a great baby sitter. ;)
Auntie Dee :)
It's not like we never go out! We go out fairly frequently (erica can attest to that)....Valentine's Day has just never worked out for us, so we a little unimpressed by it, that's all.
Although Aunt Dee...I'm liking that "buy myself an expensive gift the day after" thing. :)
And Amy....PJ's?? really? you make it sound like you bought flannel, but yeah....we all know who those "pjs" are REALLY for. *snort*
:)
casey - i like that story best too.
although i don't actually KNOW any of the other stories...that one's my favorite. Definitely.
Okay, well, they were not exactly flannel but they we're for whatever YOU think they were for, either. I'm all for comfort now.
Wow, I don't know where you'd come up with the idea that they were for something else...
Oh yeah, and I forgot to tell you that you need to read the book, "Captivating" by...oh, I forgot her name and I lent my copy to someone so I can't go look it up.
Read it, it'll give you some good insight into romance and all things pertaining. It's how we were created...as females.
Ten years ago, I was exactly where you are now--can we talk, girlfriend? :0) Seriously, go get that book.
Captivating?? by etheridge??
REALLY?
*gagging noises*
I might peruse it if you really think it's that good, but I'm not a big fan of that husband-wife etheridge team (if that's who I'm thinking of)
Yeah, that name is correct, I believe and yes, I think her hubby wrote "Wild at Heart" and possibly some other books.
It's not the woman, however, that wrote "Every Woman's Struggle" because I have some issues with that book. At least, I don't think they're the same author...crap, I really need to make the time to look up these things.
So, what's your issues with them? Maybe you saw something that I did not. Dish.
